Please Note:
To more accurately demonstrate the needless waste of life that occurred during the Black Hawk Conflict of 1832, as a result of the ordered massacre of an entire band of Native American families, I have attempted to include the known Indians and settlers who were victims of this conflict as well as the known military casualties. None of this trauma and death need to have occurred. Had the European invaders only extended the hand of friendship and respect to their Native American brothers and sought ways to share this land peaceably - how different all of our lives would be - how much healthier we and our Mother Earth would be - if only...

* The Indian Creek Massacre was NOT an action of the Black Hawk War, but rather a conflict between Potawatomi Band and a Settler by the name of William Davis over the damming of a river. However, because the Hall Girls were subsequently taken as hostages to Black Hawk's Camp, the conflict was used as a call to arms against Black Hawk, and an example of his savage nature. The casualties and survivors are noted here because of the pivotal role the massacre played in mustering the militia.
Dear Friends,
We can't change the whole world, but we can change ourselves and the piece of the world we live in. Please, offer your hand in friendship and help each other. Be color blind. Namaste. Ah Ho.

Some of the casualties listed for "1st Kellogg's Grove" were actually killed on May 24, 1832 as part of the "De St. Vrain Massacre," which occured several miles south of Kellogg's Grove. They were: Felix de St. Vrain (Indian Agent for the Sac and Mesquaki), John Fowler, Aaron Hawley, and William Hale. (The escaped were Aquilla Floyd, Alex. Higgenbotham, and Thomas Kenney.)
ReplyDelete#14 should be George W. Harkleroad, 19, killed in action at Apple River Fort, June 24, 1832.
ReplyDeleteThe action at "Prairie Grove" (often erroneously known as "Yellow Creek" or worse, "Waddam's Grove") was called (in its day) "Stephenson's Fight." The three fatalities were: Stephen P. Howard (your #34), Charles Eames (your #18), and Michael Lovell (your #36). Captain James W. Stephenson was wounded in the chest, and survived (your #55.) As all the militia casualties are known, you may delete your #55, if desired.
ReplyDeleteMoses Hallett (your #30) is erroneously listed on the Timms Monument in Kent, IL as a Black Hawk War fatality. He wasn't. The same is true of Aquilla Floyd, who not only survived the BHW, he returned south after the war ended.
ReplyDeleteThe fatalities at "Spafford's Field" June 14, 1832 were: Omri Spafford (your #53), Abraham Searles, John McIlwaine, and John Compton (also known as "Johnny Bull.") Most of these men were militia volunteers In Captain "Billy" Hamilton's Company at Hamilton's Diggings (present-day Wiota, WI.)
